Rule Thread 04 -Skills

Post by Lazarus » Thu Jun 13, 2019 7:50 am

The base skill represents the core skills common to many characters, and for the most part should be self explanatory.

If a character wants to accomplish something not covered by the base skills or their own specialisations they may be able to remember how with a Memory check. The dc depends how unlikely it for the character given their background, and other skills. For example a conman is more likely to remember how to hotwire a car than a accountant, and a librarian is more likely to remember some Latin than a bus driver. However memory is only the first step if the remembered skill requires physical effort.

The base Skill list:
Martial:_____
Martial:_____
Martial:_____
Acrobatics
Balance
Climb
Computer Access
Diplomacy
Drive
Intimidate
Jump
Observation
Persuade
Slight of Hand
Stealth
Survival
Swim
Provide Aid

Edge tags and skill limits.

Each player character in the first stage of character creation starts with three free Edge tags, which can be applied to any skill with at least 1 pip. It's recommended these tags get used on the skills you think your character will use the most, and/or the skills you would most like to eventually raise beyond 5 pips. If in doubt start with any degree skills. Additional tags can be purchased for 5 character points each, although it's unlikely you'll have that many points to spare in stage one.

Without the Edge tag you can't raise the skill beyond 5. You can also only add a single Edge die to skill checks, using two Edge from your Edge pool.

With the Edge tag you can raise the skill to ten (although in stage 1 and 2 of character creation the cap is 5), and add as many Edge die as desired for one point of Edge per die.

When advancing your character beyond stage 1 of character creation, you can only tag a skill that's already at 5 ranks, with the exception of new Degree skills for which the tag needs to be purchased first.

At higher skill levels 2nd, and 3rd tags are available to keep advancing the skill, and for die rerolls. The second tag allows a single die to be rerolled whenever Edge is used on that skill. The 3rd tag allows up to two dice to be rerolled, including the base die (although rerolls of the d12 are rerolled with a d10). With the die rolls controlled by the dm, players will need to tell me the reroll limit (eg: "reroll results under 5").

To summarise.

Character Creation stage 1:
Skill cap of 5 pips (1 point per pip)
Free Edge tag on any 3 skills with pips.
Additional Edge tags cost 5 points.

Character Creation stage 2:
Skill cap remains 5 pips
Otherwise follow rules for stage 3+

Character Creation stage 3, and onwards:
Skill cap removed.
New Edge tags can only go on 5 pip skills*
*New Degree skills get Edge tagged first.
Tagged skills can be advanced as far as 10 pips.
Edge Reroll tag available to purchase for 10 pip skills.
Edge Reroll tagged skills can be advanced as far as 15 pips.
Two Die Reroll tag available to purchase for 15 pip skills.
Two Die Reroll tagged skills can be advanced as far as 20 pips.

Costs:
Skill pip 1-5, 1 character point each.
Edge tag, 5 character points each.
Skill pip 6-10, 2 character points each.
Edge Reroll tag, 10 character points each.
Skill pip 11-15, 4 character points each.
Two Die Reroll tag, 15 character points each.
Skill pip 16-20, 8 character points each.
Etc**

**Yes theoretically a character can apply a 4th tag, raise the skill to 25, apply a 5th tag, and so on. But even if a game goes to point limits where that's affordable, with the ramping cost I don't see it as a practical use of character points.

Martial skills

Martial:_____
Martial:_____
Martial:_____

The reason the martial skills are listed with blank space in the basic skills, is because they can be specialised in a number of ways.

There are three basic groupings, Unarmed (fighting without a weapon), Melee (fighting with a close quarter weapon), and Ranged (use of ranged weapons). If a character doesn't have pips in any Martial skills, or is specialised they're still capable of rolling any of these three skills off the relevant Trait alone.

The thread 'Rule Thread 06 -Other Rules' has a post detailing combat and the possible benefits/penalties of specialisation. Refer to the 4th post of this thread: http://lazloki.prophpbb.com/topic36.html

Here's an example list of possible specialisation:

Generalised Martial skills:
Martial:Unarmed, Martial:Melee, Martial:Ranged

Specialised Martial skills:
Martial:Strikes, Martial:Grappling (specialisations of Unarmed)
Martial:Blades, Martial:Bludgeon, Martial:Chainsaw (specialisations of Melee)
Martial:Pistols, Martial:Airguns, Martial:Rifles, Martial:Shotguns (specialisation of Ranged)

Extremely Specialised Martial skills:
Martial:Ancestral Weapon, Martial:Black Widow Bowie Knife, Husqvarna 460 Rancher Chainsaw (extreme specialisations of Melee)
Martial:44 Magnum, Martial:Glock 23, Martial:Steyr Prohunter .243 (extreme specialisations of Ranged)

The limitations of an extremely specialised Martial skill, make it inadvisable for a character unless they have an Ability that lets them summon that weapon.

Degrees and custom skills

The base list of skills is by no means extant. Characters can specialise, or fill needs that don't fit amongst the base skills. There's also the option of taking a Degree, which is three related skills representing a trained field of expertise.

Some example custom skills from pre-existing characters:
Lock pick
Streetwise
Surveillance
Criminology
Car Jacking
Police Procedure
Navigation
Cooking
Accounting
Sculpting
Sewing
Education
Gymnastics

Some example Degrees from pre-existing characters:
Mathematics Degree:
-probability
-algebra
-analysis

Computing Degree:
-Anonymity
-Malware
-Hacking

Legal Degree:
-civil
-corporate
-police

Computing Degree:
-Software design
-Hacking
-Maintenance

Engineering Degree:
-Automotive
-Computers
-Remote

Chemical Engineering:
-Explosives
-Gas
-Acid/Base

Ability skills

Many Abilities have attached skills, or the Ability only exists to restrict the use of the skill.

Some examples from existing player-characters:
Combat Dodge
Survivors Luck
Sight
Telekinesis
Telepathy
Healing
Virtual Network
Jink
Nanite Control
Electronic Disruption
Scanner Sight
