Rule Thread 03 -Traits and Derived Stats

The Traits:
Strength, Vitality, Nimbleness
Reason, Grit, Wits
Influence, Luck, Awareness

These 9 Traits are shared by all characters, player characters, and npc's alike. They can be roughly regarded as sets in two ways, horizontally as physical/mental/external, or vertically as might/endurance/flexibility.

Skills all pair with one of the Traits, usually the same Trait, but sometimes the associated trait varies with circumstance. The majority of the Derived Stats are associated with one or more of the traits.

Strength

Physical might. Used with brute combat skills, brute skills, raw strength checks, and Trauma saves.

Vitality

Physical endurance. There are no base skills using Vitality. Used with five of the Derived Stats.

Nimbleness

Physical flexibility and speed. Used with combat skills with finesse, and skills requiring physical delicacy. Part of the Action Pool, the Defense score, and Sequence.

Reason

Mental might. Used with a lot of Skills, particularly skills that involve a lot of learned data, and therefore most Degree Skills. Part of the Derived Stat Memory, and the Defense score.

Grit

Mental endurance. There are no base skills using Grit. Part of the Derived Stats Health, Resilience, and Ego.

Wits

Mental flexibility and speed. Usually a secondary Trait, for when skill checks require snap instinctual decisions. Part of four of the Derived Stats.

Influence

Social might. Used with the Persuade and Diplomacy skills, and part of a characters Ego stat.

Luck

How well random chance favours the character. There are no base skills using Luck. Used to determine a characters base Edge pool, and part of the derived Death Save, and React stat. The Luck Trait is also rolled against frequently when events are more governed by random fate than by skill.

Awareness

Flexibility and speed of perception. Used chiefly with the much rolled Observation skill, and sense specific skills. Part of the Action Pool, Defense score, and Sequence.

Health: ((V+G)x4)

This is the total damage pool a character can endure before being rendered unconscious, and typically a character will die if the pool reaches a negative score beyond its own total.

Edge Pool: (Lx3)

Points characters can spend to add d10's to Skill checks, Death Saves, and anything else 'Edge enabled'.

Action Points: (V+W+A)

All actions have a point cost, and this is the limit to how much a character can achieve in their turn.

Defense: (N+R+W+A)

The target value an opponent has to achieve to strike the character with a targeted attack.

Death Save: (V+L)

The only Derived Stat that uses Edge by default. Most injuries require Death saves, failure can maim or kill the character.

Memory: (R+W)

The characters ability to remember past events. Also a chance to remember how to perform actions not covered by the characters skills, the dc determined by the likelihood in relation to the characters background.

Resilience: (V+G)

The saving throw for most tranquillisers, most knock out attacks, and such. Used where physical stress has a mental component.

React: (W+L)

The check for dodging slow moving threats, moving with a blast, stepping away from falling masonry, etc.

Trauma: (V+S)

The characters resistance to tasers, nerve strikes, and feats of physical endurance. used when the tolerance to physical stress is more dependant on strength.

Sequence: (A+N)

Determines the order of character actions during conflict.

Ego: (I+G)

Resistance to mental influence, when a skill doesn't override.

Power pool

The pool of energy a character has for power based Abilities. The total is governed by the combined point-buy cost of all such abilities the character has.
