Rule Thread 01 -Edge System

Post by Lazarus » Thu Jun 13, 2019 7:39 am

Simple details of the system and settings are covered in the thread 'Basics - Setting/Ruleset/Character/Play', so I recommend reading that first, as it's essentially Rule Thread 0.

The EdgeSystem was developed by a gaming group in Nelson New Zealand. The intent was to make a versatile classless system that can be used to make any kind of character. Some of the rules have been tweaked to be more appropriate to the Helios system, but the essence remains the same.

The rules as a whole are different from any other roleplaying system I've encountered, but take inspiration from a variety of sources. Credit goes to the Fallout RPG, D&D 3.5, White Wolf's World of Darkness, D20 Star Wars, and other sources I can't readily name. The Helios setting is mainly inspired by books by the writers Dean Koontz, and Larry Niven.

The main parts of the system are Traits, Skills, Abilities, and Derived Stats. Checks are mostly made with d10 or d12 supplemented by d10's.

There are 9 Traits that go from 0-5 and beyond, those are paired with skills, and used for the Derived Stats. Trait checks are almost always d10+ stat, or d10+ the Derived Stats. Action points cover what can be done in a round (say 3 points to fire a pistol), and defence is a passive score.

The Traits are: Strength, Vitality, Nimbleness, Reason, Grit, Wits, Influence, Luck, and Awareness.
Which derive into: Health ((V+G)x4), Action points (W+A+V), Defence (N+R+W+A), Memory (R+W), Resilience (V+G), Sequence (A+N), Trauma (V+S), React (W+L), Ego Whips (I+G), and Ego (I+G).
Additionally there's Death Save (V+L) which for player character uses a d12, Edge Pool (Lx3) which can be used for bonus d10's on Skills and other Edge enabled checks, and Power Pool which is derived from the total points spent in power using Abilities.

Skills vary according to character background. In base there are a set of universal Skills everyone can use and increase, specialist Skills created for the character, and trained Degree Skills which have sub skills. Skill checks use d12, rolls of 11-12 are 10+Edge, the Edge can be used to replenish the edge pool or roll extra dice.

The Edge Pool is a pool of points that can be used to roll extra d10 dice on Skill checks, Death Saves, and perhaps other checks depending on character Abilities. It replenishes to base at storyteller discretion, and can also be replenished by 1 when a d12 rolls 11, or by 2 when rolling 12. Tagged Skills cost 1 edge to roll up, and can be rolled up with multiple dice. Un tagged Skills can be rolled up by spending 2 edge, and can only be rolled up by +1d10.

Abilities are anything not covered by the base rules. Does your character have claws? Special eyesight? Magic powers? Special armour? Special weaponry? Cybernetic implants? And countless other possibilities, depending once again on the setting, power limits, and character points allotted. Most equipment does not come under the point buy of character creation, but some equipment if significant does.
