Book 1 collected recaps

Post by Lazarus » Thu Jun 13, 2019 9:32 pm

As events unfolded five prisoners made their escape from an inner city lab, run by the sinister New Race. They witnessed at least two waves of experimental things escape behind them before the building burned into the ground. The fire spread becoming a major disaster for Detroit, in a summer already marked with unprecedented murder rates. One of their group Stefan was recruited to carry a badly slashed police officer to the nearby Provider clinic, where he found out the nanotech the lab had left inside him was detectable to Provider security.
Well away from the blaze they secured funds by robbing an atm, and retreated to a motel on the other side of Detroit. After securing computers Shiro and Rose of the group started hunting down details of the enemy, while Stefan and Sarah risked a meeting with the alien Providers. The Providers seemed sincere in their desire to help, and mentioned a Human resistance to the New Race agenda.
As a group the five escapees returned to the clinic, and made common cause with the Providers, and the resistance. Provided with a little more information, contacts, resources, and a degree of immortality the five of them relocated to a safehouse. Their they have time to prepare for whatever comes next.

Previously:
Resting at their new safehouse our five protagonists received a text message from a new resistance contact. This new contact Detective Louis Fitch met with them, and together they identified two of the inhuman cops who had held the five prisoner. Conner Smith was chosen for capture, living alone in a new apartment he looked like an easy target. A plan was hatched and days later implemented to enter his building disguised as exterminators. Unfortunately for the plan Conner wasn't as isolated as he appeared, residing in a building actually tenanted only by members of the New Race. Between a warning signal from an odd looking manager at reception, and the fact Conner was already readying to leave when the four approached his room, Conner was ready and able to fight back. As equipped as he was Conner goes down fast under their combined assault.

Before Conner can be properly secured the building manager and two hulking men are detected heading up the stairs. The hulks are quickly downed, but the fight with the manager is hard won, almost giving Conner an unseen opportunity to free himself. Finding the alarm going in Conner's apartment an attempt is made to re-purpose it, but the remaining six at home inhabitants turn out to be loitering in the ground floor corridor. Using some subterfuge to gain advantage the four protagonists enter battle with the six New Race, ultimately defeating them all without series injury. Making a discreet exit they took all the New Race combatants, both those alive and dead back to the embassy of the aliens known as Providers.

A few days pass with some of the group looking lightly into names and times listed on a map found on conner. Returning to the embassy-clinic they learn new details about the New Race. Analysis of the prisoners suggests outright destruction of the New Race may be vital to Human survival, but also hints this cause may be achievable.

The escapees began looking into a map and attached notes found on the captured New Race policeman Conner. Online and street efforts, aided by their police allies, and a sinister online entity calling itself Annunciata turn the map into a tool to track down the murdering creature Slender. In the process Shiro appears to have gained Annunciata as an online stalker

Having baited the creature to a rooftop the group manage to confront slender, Shiro is downed, and the creature comes close to escape, but is ultimately subdued. Before they can leave the scene, an RPG rocket fired from the streets below blasts Stefan back from the roofs edge, unconscious he survives only by virtue of his regenerative abilities. After retreating to the streets they identify two motorcyclists patrolling for Slender. This new threat is evaded in favour of getting the Slender creature and their own wounded back to the Providers.

The group take some time away from the daunting war with the New Race, and from each other. Rose discovers one of the New Race drinking alone in a bar, and calls the group in to track and identify the creature. After a long night staking out the creature, they don't have him named, but have identified a met companion as Octavia Tipton. Another lead identified is something the pair called 'the pack' which they drive off together to seek out. The surveillance party leave the creatures to their driving, and return home to rest.

The escapees followed up on a New Race woman they'd discovered, a psychiatrist called Octavia Tipton. After Shiro made a severe attack on her online, her behaviour was noticed by her creator, and punished with her death. Her body was whisked off in an ambulance under the cover of a 'heart attack', which was tracked to a body swap with a waste disposal truck. Another New Race man, who played a part in calling that ambulance was taken to another site, that appears to be another Helios research lab. Meanwhile the New Race man that they originally tracked to Octavia remains unidentified, except for a tracking bug planted under his car.

Detective Louis Fitch one of the homicide cops aware of the New Race made use of Rose's talent for detecting them, identifying another of them working as an FBI agent. This ties in to Fitch obtaining a visitation date for a prisoner at Leben Maximum, a prison highly suspect of New Race involvement. The visit date gets delayed as a spate of violent mass murders becomes the focus of Detroit's homicide department.

Thanks to contact put in play by Fitch, the escapees go to meet Reno Salvatore, in the hope of securing alternate identities to work with. Salvatore is suspicious at first, as he's connected enough to know their contact has history as a police snitch. Things become complicated when Rose discovers a New Race spy in Salvatore security force. The mole Buster Dawkins is outed in a violent albeit brief shootout, ending with Buster's capture, and another guard seriously injured. Aided by a lapse in composure by Buster, the escapees convince Salvatore of the threat posed by the New Race, and that Buster himself must die. After they verify the humanity of Salvatore's other staff the five of them arrange payment for the sought after identity work, and are connected with Tim Watson an expert identity forger.

With new names to use in public, work begins on creating a Nerd Herd cover business.

Previously:
The escapees allies in the Detroit police force 'The Resistance' were facing closer scrutiny. Detective Fitch and Damon spoke of a new Violent Crimes Task Force, which was in the process of stipping Detroit's homicide department of scores of open cases. During the conversation Fitch shared intel on another Helios lab to which the escapees had tracked a New Race van. Supplies to the building suggested it was a more populated facility than the one they'd escaped from. Secondly he shared details on the case of the 'Detroit Slasher', a new spree killer who's crime pattern pointed him out as an unstable New Race duplicant the group had already been tracking.

The group decide to act on the slasher threat first, after giving Fitch more tools to aid survailance on the lab. The creature is tracked to a small motel, where he's killed the guests, killed the staff, and begun to nest. After viewing some of the things grisly work they find it, and much different than the man they had previously tracked. He'd been metamorphing into a hulking creature more suited to a cheap slasher film. During the confrontation they found the creatures mental programming was severely broken, giving them a rare window to question the creature without the usual veil of New Race loyalty. The conversation revealed details on Victor's kill commands, that could instantly terminate New Race that displeased their master, and indicated that Victor's death would eliminate all the New Race. On a deeper level, Rose's telepathy linked an older name with Victor Helios, the name being Victor Frankenstein, believed until then to be a fictional creation of long dead writer Mary Shelley. The creatures patients for conversation quickly wore out, leading to a brief fight, and the creatures death.

His entry aided by Fitch, Shiro paid a visit to Leben Maximum, using Shiro's new cover identity Mr Petit. Shiro learns that one of the Annunciata runs the prisons high tech security. He manages to hack around her defenses enough to make contact with his old associate Crenshaw. Crenshaw proves eager to talk, if only to get rid of Shiro. Shiro's probing leads to a suggestion that many or perhaps all of the prisoners have been secretly subjected to experimental enhancement, a fact kept secret by the prisons 'no contact' policy, and doctored footage. He also learns that similar prisons are under construction around the world.

Rose makes a new contact calling himself Wolf who runs a conspiracy zine called Out of Darkness. She pays him to begin looking into Helios' paper history.

The group meet again with Fitch to plan an assault on the laboratory. They delay for preperations, and start their assault at midnight as July 12 begins. There are five guards guarding the carpark, they put up a hard fight causing some injuries, but the group puts them down without any alarm being raised. Detectives Sanchez and Mahajan control the street scene with Brent and a group of fake guards, while the group heads below. They entered the prison comlinked with the Providers pilot Tala, who also kept them in contact with Brent.

Shiro hacks into the security sysyem giving them near immunity from camera survailance, and Sarah finds a hidden set of 9 below ground floors the elevator can access.

They decide to start at the bottom, fighting a workcrew of reptillian Epsilons under the command of a Gamma. The hot and badly lit level turns out to be a thermal power plant supplying the buildings hidden power requirements.

The next level up reveals the true nature of Annunciata and two other New Race entities called Fenrir, and Omega. All of them New Race Alpha brains damned to a sensationless life slaved into computer systems. The Fenrir and Omega brains are dormant, and the systems their connected to suggest thei activation will come as part of Frankenstein's end game. Explosives are left in place to remove Annunciata from the systems in case they fail to keep the security blind.

Hacking cameras on the other floors, and feeling out with Rose's telepathy they reveal more about the unvisited levels. Two of the levels, one medical, and one a prison have prisoners in a similar pradicament to the one they escaped from. Most of the other levels appear to be tank farms for the various New Race types, along with more exotic creatures. The top floor has office workers compiling data down to the server room where Annunciata was found. Lastly a testing level is between the hospital and prison, which Shiro judges a torture floor.

They decide to head into the prison next. Interupting four New Race doctors and the old man they'd finished 'enhancing'. Shiro gets knocked out with a tranquiliser, otherwise the fight goes heavily in the teams favour. As they put down the last of the doctors, the old man having freed himself from medical restraints bashes one of them with his cane. He communicates sparcely between koffing fits.

Sarah finds a stimulant to get Shiro on his feet. Before they can start exploring the prison they have to fight a doctor and guard escorting a prisoner, and bug the elevator hall door to keep 5 more guards unaware. The prisoner introduced herself as Molly, and although still somewhat loopy from sedatives joins them in entering the prison corridors to rescue her fellow prisoners. The old man convinces them to leave him resting in the operating room.

They made short work of a couple of roaming prison guards them returned to the operating room to investigate a suspicious noise. They found the old man had torn the security door off of its hinges, letting in the five guards. Hacked survailance revealed him to really be Victor Helios/Frankenstein himself. Caught up in a fight with the five guards on one side, and two more prison guards on the other most of them lost ground on Victor. Shiro left his comrades fighting and persued Victor along, following the wake of destruction as Victor telekinetically destroyed every barrier between himself and escape. Shiro tried to pursue up the elevator shaft, but overestimated his climbing ability, and nearly plummeted to his death. Victor moved on dismissing Shiro for dead.

The group managed to put down all their New Race opponents, and regrouped with Shiro. While healing up they terminated the now aware Annunciata, and used the recorded kill command to put down multiple 'Betas', some of which were trying to descend the elevator shaft from the office floor Victor had entered. Rose and Sarah overrid Shiro's desire to persue Victor, instead setting to evacuating the prisoners, and intending to rescue two more on the hospital level.

Stefan takes the prisoners out, then has to retreat from arriving New Race reinforcements. Sarah, Rose, Shiro, and company are left with the new problem of how to get out without facing a well armed army.

In the hospital level they ran afoul of a trap set by Annunciata before she died. With alarms blaring, and all the doors springing open, all of the New Race on the floor starting heading to fight the intruders. Aided by Molly, and another prisoner they called 'Fireball' the group fought multiple Beta Doctors, multiple Delta guards, and the hybrid creature known to the prisoners as Bonebreaker. The fight seems to end with the groups victory, until the surprise headshot from a last guard killed Shiro. Tala reasured them he wasn't dead enough to be beyond repair, because of the Snapshot nanotech put in his system by the Providers.

At the end of the hospital corridor they found what that guard had been guarding, another prisoner in a state beyond saving. After securing the mercy of having her life support switched off this prisoner (Rita) helps them escape through a portal. The portal opens miles off target, requiring them to arrange transport back from canada.

With the successful rescue of twenty five prisoners, the escapees regrouped at their safe house, now home to an extra twenty two people, plus a Provider. The other three are being treated at another Provider clinic in Canada. Shiro is revived, and greeted by their new 'in house' doctor Provider 26724A otherwise called Doctor Young. The house is also undergoing an underground expansion courtesy of a nanotech package sent by Tala.

Construction of our heroes expanded safe house concludes. They begin settling in with their expanded company.

A series of powerful bombs explode under Detroit buildings, along with several other targets they simultaneously destroys the Provider clinic, and the police station housing their detective allies. Our heroes drive to see the clinics disaster zone for themselves, and barely manage to escape a public fight with four of the New Race, two of which are enhanced. An Annunciata makes their escape more difficult, causing them to lose their jeep to a traffic jam.

Joining them at the safehouse are Detectives Ariana Sanchez and Louis Fitch. The two are the only known (Human) survivors of Detroit's homicide squad. After recoving from injuries Fitch undergoes an extreme rejuvenation, endeavouring to create a new identity, mostly to protect his family from potential threats.

Shiro makes contact with the Annunciata obsessed with him. He talks to her in a computer game, where she communicated using a custom game avatar called Nun131.

The Providers publicly announce plans to move on with their interstellar exploration, after they've terraformed Mars and Venus.

Victor Helios appears in his own press interview, announcing his company's success at developing a rejuvenation process to rival the service offered by the Providers. Our heroes see the potential threat that he's more likely to replace people with New Race clones than his is to really restore anyone's youth.

Rose's conspiracy truther contact Alfonso Wolf sends her pictures and articles from Victor Helios' time in New Orleans. They show he was influential, and also show that he and his wife didn't noticeable age in two decades.

Doctor Young reveals some preliminary information tying the modern Victor Helios with methods in the literary classic Frankenstein. She shares some initial findings on a lifeforce energy that mimics electricity during storms.

In testing their combined powers to explore the neighbourhood around their base, the heroes find a local Pastor and church caretaker who have both been replaced with New Race duplicates. With consideration that attacking the pastor could bring more enemies too close for comfort, they search for more New Race in Detroit's various churches. This leads to revealing four more churches with New Race staff. Shiro puts all these findings online, attempting to create a public awareness of the nine revealed New Race, and in doing so attempt to lure Victor into using kill commands.

Meanwhile the group bug the car of the Lovewell's, and trace the quartets continued patrols of Detroit roads. While looking for other church New Race, the heroes run into another patrol, but manage to escape without a fight. Fitch warns of further New Race guarding many of the ways in and out of Detroit.

The efforts to out the 9 named New Race bring no reaction from Victor, nor any clear reaction from the public. Afterwards the heroes locate surveillance vans near all the targets, linked with Detroit's new Violent Crimes Task Force. All the vans have a mixed Human/New Race crew. When Rose identifies the local priest Pastor Norbert Theodore Gray as an Alpha, Shiro makes him their main target. An attempt to make Grey look unstable is seen through by Ricki, the New Race surveilling that church. Ultimately our Heroes retreat knowing their enemy were anticipating some kind of attack.

While the heroes take time focusing on the churches the two experimental New Race travelling with Benny and Cindi Lovewell grow increasingly unmanageable.

Back in Detroit after his investigation of Victor's New Orleans History, Alphonse Wolf requests a meeting with Rose. Rose agrees, but prepares for trouble.

The meeting with Alphonse Wolf turned out to be a trap.  Wolf himself turned out to be a New Race duplicant of the real man.  During his meeting with Rose he triggers the activation of ten creatures in freezer units in and around the diner.  The nigh invisible Chameleons prove no match for our heroes, who vanquish all ten before departing with an unconscious Alphonse.

Under medical scrutiny the clone of Alphonse is revealed to be mere days old, made by a genetic printer instead of three months of tank growth.  The implications this raise make finding the facility he came from a priority.  Fortunately in copying the real Alphonse's memories, the duplicant had picked up his habit for keeping receipts.  Our heroes tracked him back to a bus station, and began searching the area.  Shiro used an ability that allowed his companions to use minor abilities of their own remotely, but when Rose used her telepathy this way she was driven into rage by a telepathic attack.  Ultimately this helped the heroes track the faux Wolf back to a soap factory with familiar Helios security tech.

Rather than a frontal assault our heroes make use of a nearby storm tunnel to get close below ground.  They find that the storm tunnel already has a hidden exit, revealed by a growth of strange black fungus.  Shiro gets an infection when the fungus a substance designed to weaken minds against telepathy.  After retreating to cure Shiro they returned with equipment to burn through the fungus, and cut open the concealed door.  Beyond the door is a small room with a bag of riches, which seems to be prepared so Frankenstein himself could make an emergency escape via the storm drain.  They find the dead body of the Alpha in charge of the facility, trapped in the room without the access code needed.  Examination of the man and a computer in the room reveals an experimental telepath had taken over the facility.

Entering the facility proper they find the staff all infected by the fungus.  A brain dead copy of the administrator in place to deflect enquiries from the Detroit Annunciata, in a way that allowed the telepath to add its mental influence.  The telepath, named Hera after the project that created it had set in motion projects of its own.  Projects such as the fungus, and a distorted replica of Frankenstein that could spew more of the fungus, as well as speak with Frankenstein's voice.  The heroes fought their way through the facility, killing most of the staff, Hera's creations, and ultimately Hera itself.  With the facility to themselves they destroyed the experimental bioprinters, and stripped all surviving data they could find.

Without the influence of Hera, it was a matter of time before the New Race would arrive to investigate the gone quiet facility.  The heroes were aware of the risk, and managed to get away unseen with all their spoils.  Finally returning to base hopeful that Frankenstein's printers and telepaths wouldn't be a threat again before they could stop him and his plans.

As the heroes recover from their ordeal Delia one of the enhanced people the heroes has previously rescued (back in chapter 6) has a dream vision through the eyes of Frankenstein's driver.  She learns the centuries old scientist living under the alias of Victor Helios is returning to Detroit.

Previously:

The resistance meet to discuss the status of their plans to unseat Victor Helios.  During the meeting our heroes set their next objective, to locate, and capture the New Race brain Annunciata 131.  At this point they finally have enough clues to pinpoint her location, tied into Detroits electronics and utilities from the Majestic Centre.  The Majestic Centre is one of the largest buildings in Detroit, housing the fastest ISP in the city, and occupying it's own city block.

Other factors make the majestic a high security target, so the team opts to look into options for entering from the roof.  The buildings isolation complicates matters, but they devise a plan to simply fly over in a levitated row boat from another tall buildings.  Their hope that the row boat if discovered will raise more confusion than concern.  Staging from the relatively nearby Leland Hotel their arrival plan seems to go off without a hitch.  The infiltration team that lands comprises Shiro, Sarah, Rose, and Molly (Molly is an NPC rescued in a previous chapter).

Unknown to the group Annunciata's security includes micro camera's concealed on the roof which go unnoticed.  Alert to their arrival Annunciata wakes a security force of New Race twenty strong, and starts considering other ways to kill or delay the intruders.  The heroes realise their cover is blown when they find more of the mini cameras in the stairwell.  Fighting ensues as the security force engages them in the buildings stairwell, but ultimately the heroes prevail.

Annunciata is mentally manipulated by Rose into not reporting her danger immediately to her maker, and instead focuses on tampering with the environment.  Her tampering puts them at threat of electrocution or poisoning, but they push on to find where her brain is hidden.  More New Race manage to ascend to the floor where all this is happening, but damage in the stairwell, and the hazards meant to slow down the heroes work against their arriving in time.

The Annunciata falls into despair when the heroes reveal their intention to capture rather than kill.  After disconnecting one of a series of backup brains they manage to do the same with hers.  Another of the backup brains switches on as the 131 brain is disconnected, and the newly wakened mind attempts to take control of the chaotic system it wakes to.  The heroes lay waste to Annunciata's life support and the remaining brains as they move to make their escape.  As the other Annunciata dies in the middle of asserting control it causes system failures, most noticeably knocking out power to the building and much of Detroit's power grid.

Shiro escapes via a teleportation route he'd set out in advance, but has to do so on his own.  With time running out on escaping unchallenged Rose opts to grab her remaining companions and fly back to the Leland.  Without the stability provided by the rowboat this second flight taxes her power, but she manages to set down without harming her companions, although grabbing them in the first place injures one of her shoulders.  Sarah's nanite armour provides some stability to aid the flight.

Meeting the team on the street, their comrade Stefan attempts to drive them home through the blackout.  Unfortunately they run into a security checkpoint.  Not knowing whether the police checkpoint has Humans or New Race, but knowing they risk being recognised as terrorists in either case they opt to pull over before the checkpoint and attempt to continue past it on foot.  A paranoid householder alerts the police enough that their retreat becomes highly suspicious.  Rose diverts most of the approaching group with a combination of telekinetic distraction, and mental influence.

However one of the neighbourhood watch members assisting the checkpoint is New Race, sees them through enhanced eyes, recognises them as targets of his Maker, and decides to follow.  He doesn't realise the threat they pose and tries to follow them alone.  Rose decides she won't entertain his pursuit, paralyses him with a mental strike, and flies the group safely out of range.  Out of sight of the heroes the stunned creature recovers surrounded by concerned neighbours.

After moving further away in the cover of  a storm tunnel and culvert the group decides to simply call in an Uber.  The rest of their trip home is uneventful apart from seeing the effect the new Annunciata's death had on the traffic lights, and Shiro fixing a few of them in passing.

Back at their sanctuary Shiro turns to captured brains over to the Provider, and she explains the work she and her distant colleagues will begin in the hope of reviving Annunciate 131 as a free willed near-human.  She also shows the team research that could provide an instant kill weapon to use on New Race, albeit one which will have very limited ammunition.

Previously:

The group sit down with former detective Ariana Sanchez to plan their next move.  They opt to pursue an investigation that'll get them out of Detroit for awhile, and travel disguises to the nearby town of Westland.  Their plan being to investigate sightings of 'Elves' and 'Orcs' that have become real enough to cause a couple of deaths.

They found out a woman had died in a car accident, and a man had died of violence.  Focusing on the man they visited the local police, and bugged the building to get the investigation records.  Those records revealed his body was being held in a hospital morgue not far from where he was killed.  Investigating the hospital they find the body missing, and suspect a New Race cover up.  The cover up was flawed, leaving photos of the man's personal effects.  Those photos reveal he worked for a nearby psychiatric hospital Walter P. Reuther.

Investigating WPR they quickly realise the staff are heavily infested with New Race doubles, but not to the extent where they could storm the place without catching human staff in the crossfire.  Assisted by former detective Louis Fitch they move into a Westland away base, and split their investigation between the cryptid sightings and detailing the hospital.

Once most of the false reports are weeded out, the cryptid sighting show a pattern.  The creatures appearing in a three night cycle.  They also recognise that power outages around the hospital accompany many of the sighting, although in a much smaller radius.  Rose sees the brief arrival and departure of one of the 'Elves', enough to realise their further from human than their fantasy namesakes.  Shiro and Sarah works with a support team to get camera coverage of likely appearance sites, mostly covering wooded areas where they tend to hide.

As a result of camera's and patrols the team (Sarah, Rose, Shiro, and Stefan) reach a suburban corner where a group of the 'Orcs' are approaching a house.  The Orcs look less human than the Elves, essentially humanoid but with an ancestry more toad/bovine than simian.  The alien group are led by a leader that seems mentally scrambled, and thinks in Tolkein's Dark Speech instead of the thoroughly alien language the others think in.  That behaviour shifts, leaving the leader acting much more like the others as it orders them to approach the houses front door.  A man who the heroes decide on reflection was New Race opens his door, only to be cut down and beheaded by the Orcs.  Shiro gets challenged with a bellow as he approaches the Orcs, as does Stefan.  The Orcs begin disappearing, and Stefan catching one of them in a handshake vanishes briefly with them.  Eventually all that remains is one of their weapons and the headless body of thier victim.

Consulting with a Provider diplomat the heroes find out the Orcs are from a different universe.  Summoned part way across, but springing back to their own universe when the summoning energy stopped.  There was informed speculation that like the weapon there could be more permanent transitions.

Much was discovered by covert investigation and monitoring of the WPR hospital.  There was a biological element to the hospital camera systems, something similar to the Annunciata brains, but more specialised (later found to be called Cujo).  One of the hospital wings, semi-separate from the rest of the hospital was a newer construction fully staffed by New Race.  The twenty patients in this new wing were being taken out of camera view one by one, for roughly three hour sessions.  Hospital wide the patients had bracers like the power control bracers used on the heroes and those they'd rescued in the past.

The heroes investigated those bracers by visiting a patient outside the secure wing.  They found that in her case the bracer didn't have any ability suppressant, instead being mostly hollow.  What it did have was a tracker and a medication delivery system.  During the same visit Shiro breached some of the buildings internal security.

Days passed without encountering any more cryptids.  There were brief sightings, including reports suggesting the 'Elf' race were getting bolder and more violent in their exploration.

Eventually the heroes decided they had sufficient intel to enter the secure wing by night.  Planning to covertly take down any New Race resistance, and rescue the patients that appeared to be being used as more experimental subjects.

The layout as they knew it was seven floors, including a supposed basement level.  Shiro began the infiltration by moving in while Rose telepathically distracted Cujo.  Finding the ground floor empty at that time Shiro hacked into hidden lift controls to make his way into the basement.  He explored briefly, examining some of the rooms, before realising Cujo had a room to itself, the last room of a side corridor.  Cujo was mad and confused, and Shiro decided to dispatch the wired in brain planning to control the camera's himself.  The plan worked to a point, but with an unforeseen consequence as all the patient bracers shut down.  Outside Rose started hearing a din of multiple telepaths then the buildings power shut down.  Shiro was plunged into pure darkness.

What had happened was the shutdown of the bracers caused four of the patients to begin their own escape plan.  One was a teleporter who whisked one of her companions to the roof, another out of the building, and then began liberating other patients.  The man on the roof used an ability to dampen electricity, blacking out the hospital, and making sure the bracers couldn't be reactivated.  When they realised the situation the New Race wardens began knocking out patients, with some resistance from those with more aggressive powers.  As a side effect of the outage twenty unfinished New Race clones (intended replacements for the experimented on patients) woke suffocating in their tanks.

With Shiro trapped, the others entered the building.  Fighting their way through the floors they encountered Rupture (real name Millie) the teleporter.  Meanwhile Rose conducted a sporadic psychic conversation with another patient named Noah.  Through them they found out that the source of the power outage was their friend on the roof.  Stefan made his way to the roof and (failing at diplomacy) knocked the patient out to restore power.

With power restored Shiro had access to the basement cameras.  He saw the half made clones filling the halls, and a group of New Race trying to get upstairs, or get word out via cellphone.  He fought his way through most of them, before they began anticipating his teleporting combat tactics.  Later Stefan helped clear out and torch the basement.

In the levels above, the heroes found out how the group of four patients had been working together, and that the cryptids and power outages had been their work.  Simon (the summoner) was somewhere outside the hospital.  Without any serious resistance the heroes cleared out the New Race staff.  A group of the Orcs including children entered the hospital, fleeing nearby Elves.  Detecting a huge group of the Elves gathering outside Rose used mental influence to turn them against a group of New Race reinforcements.

Outside (unknown to the heroes until later) Simon had met with a group of the Elves who forced him to summon hundreds of their kind across, before slaughtering him.

The heroes, assisted by support teams outside the hospital managed to evacuate rescuing the Orcs and all but four of the patients.  In searching for the remaining patients they found Simon dead.  Later they found two more sheltering from Elves, although one of the two tried to control them with telepathy.  The last patient gets captured by the authorities before the Resistance can reach her.

In the end Westland is in disarray with roaming packs of Elves causing chaos in the night.  Police and other agencies deal with many of them with the rest retreating to parks and woods.  The Orcs are bussed away to a campground until Providers can help with the communication barrier.  Stefan stays with the Orcs.  The rescued patients get relocated to the Resistances underground headquarters in Detroit.

And finally....

The liberated Annunciata 'Nun' is finally ready to talk. She freely provides intel on Frankenstein and his operation.

The resistance spearheaded by our heroes decides it's time to take the fight to Victor.

Returning to the lab that they'd previously rescued prisoners from, Shiro infiltrates, and turns control over to Nun through a long distance takeover. An ambush is planned for Victor's secret entrance. Access to the facility reveals that Victor was preparing to replace the American president with one of his New Race clones. The plot would have included an attack on the president to be blamed on Stefan.

Victor arrives at the basement carpark with his secret entrance. Shiro sets off a recording of Victor's own kill phrases, elimenating his New Race guards. The fight against Victor 'Helios' Frankenstein doesn't take long as he's taken down by an overwealming assault.

The death of Frankenstein begins a fallout apparently eliminating all of his creations.

As Victor's heart finally stops beating, a failsafe triggers in his mechanical parts. A pulse of energy pours forth, throwing back those around him.

Victor's failsafe is thorough, and his empire dies with him. But the bones it leaves behind will have lasting consequences.

Helios industries has positioned itself to control more than half of the prison and psychiatric population of the world, along with his secret prisons. As Annunciata's and other boxed brains die, a common fault occurs. Bracers deactivate. Countless prisoners find burgeoning powers growing as the restraint ends. The age of superhumans begins.

Meanwhile unseen by anyone. In a nigh abandoned New Orleans mansion a hidden tank opens. In the hidden room of a Detroit mansion another tank opens. Not long after in a hidden Midwest location, a bricked up doorway explodes open.

Meanwhile an immense entity stirs. Still broken, but more aware than it's been in two hundred years.

The energy stored within Victor Frankenstein pulses out as he dies.  That pulse creates a signal that relays through towers and satellites across the globe.  Pulses of the stored refined death energy pass through the New Race, and other abominations born of Victor's tanks.  The energy combines with the refined life power that animated them during their creation, and the vast wave of it leaves them dead as stones.  People are aghast when they witness the death, but the energy disperses harmlessly into the ground without harming a single human life.

Victor lies dead at your feet.  Many in your gathering force dumbfounded at how swiftly the enemy of mankind died.  Fitch coms.  "Shiro's message is going out, as are other signals.  I'm gonna try to make some calls before the phone lines go wild."  Someone else's voice cuts in, one of Fitch's people.  "Uh ok, I'm monitoring television, shut me up if I'm crowding the line?  Uh people are dead, I mean not everyone.  There are dead people on the live broadcasts, especially news.  Not news stories yet, I mean there are news anchors slumped at their desks.  People are freaking out.  Um and we're getting calls from the field.  New Race we'd been watching are falling down dead.  Oh yeah good point!  Sorry, some of those news broadcasts are international.  I uh, I guess that's all you need for now.

In the aftermath Fitch organises a meeting with the acting police chief. Shiro, Sarah, and Stefan attend. On their way to the meeting they see how decimated the Detroit police were by the death of the New Race. Acting chief Williams takes them seriously, and makes overtures that Fitch should be acting chief instead. Police are dispatched to investigate Leben Prison. Steps are begun to have Sarah reinstated to the police force (she was a new officer before her abduction).

Via a conference call the group meet with President Hillary Clinton. Plans are made for Shiro to provide tech support in securing Helios facilities.

Word comes back from the force sent to Leben of fire and a prison break underway.
